Statues of Our Lady of Perpetual Help
and of St. John the Apostle (front left side)

This sacred image of Our Lady and the Child Jesus is very rare in Japan. It was modeled after an icon made on the island of Crete, Many miracles have occurred to the people who have prayed in front of this icon. In the 15th century, the icon was transferred to Rome, where it was placed in the custody of St. Alfonso's Church.
Beside the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help stands the statue of St. John the Apostle. It was to John that Jesus entrusted his mother, when he said from the cross, "Behold your mother!" John wrote the fourth Gospel, which expounds on the theological significance of the doctrine of Christ. His symbol is the eagle, which can be seen assisting John in his writing by carrying an inkpot with its beak.

St. Anna is the mother of the Virgin Mary, She is reading a parchment Bible to her daughter Mary. This image expresses the importance of teaching children the faith through showing them the right way to pray and to live.
A statue of St. Joseph is standing to the side. As the husband of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph was chosen by God to be the guardian of the Child Jesus, The lily held on his chest represents that he was chosen as the husband of the Virgin Mary.
The axe in his hand symbolizes his occupation as a carpenter and the importance of labor, May Day, which is recognized as the festival of the worker throughout the world, has its origin in the Feast day (May 1st) of St. Joseph the Worker.
